Sweet Burlesque
Sweet Burlesque is a concept developed by our owner, Headmistress Ann, with the aim of making everyone feel comfortable in their own bodies. The focus is first and foremost on having fun through dance, body positivity, and feminine power in a safe environment! We draw inspiration from 'The Art of Tease' philosophy and the humorous, satirical element of Burlesque that charms, seduces, and surprises the audience time and time again, blending it with various dance genres. Unlike traditional burlesque, Sweet Burlesque's classes never focus on stripping or nudity. Our primary focus is to evoke joy through dance, choreography, sensuality, and elegance, spiced with humor and seductive charm - this is the essence of Sweet Burlesque.

Sweet Burlesque offers burlesque dance classes for all levels. We definitely have a class that suits your needs. The focus of the classes is to highlight the feminine, fun, and seductive aspects while providing a fantastic workout and improving overall flexibility. We guarantee sweat on the forehead and a big smile on your face. Since our start in 2011, Sweet Burlesque Dance School has grown to 21 classes and nearly 400 students - an amazing community that cheers and supports each other!
At Sweet Burlesque you will get a bit of cheeky comedy and lots of fun. We promise an hour of Burlesque dancing with lots of tease, humor and 'all eyes on the brides'- moments. Our talented trainers will make sure everyone is a part of the class plus give the 'future -bride- to- be' an unforgettable experience!
Sweet Burlesque offers a wide range of workshops, grooves, and masterclasses in both burlesque and dance genres. Our courses are presented by both internal and external instructors who are experts in their fields. We love to experiment and explore various themes and techniques, and we encourage our students to actively participate in the process. Whether you want to refine your performance skills, delve into character work, or simply have fun on the dance floor, we provide an inclusive and supportive environment where you can explore and grow. Sweet Burlesque is renowned for its diverse range of shows, presenting everything from Student Showcases to Christmas shows and much more. In addition to our wide selection of performances, we also offer Sweet Sensations, which handles our appearances at major events. With over 200 shows under our belt, Sweet Sensations is Denmark's only professional burlesque troupe. We've had the honor of performing at major events such as the Northside Festival (2017, 2018, 2019), Copenhagen Jazz Festival (2017, 2019), and Copenhell (2024). Our top-tier entertainment offers a seductive and magnificent experience, where our talented dancers will enchant you with their humor and glamorous costumes. THE (SHORT) HISTORY OF BURLESQUE
Burlesque and ‘The Art of Tease’ slowly began to flourish back in the middle of the 19th century. In Europe, Burlesque shows were a combination of satire, Performance Art and alluring entertainment, especially in England. Lydia Thompson, an English dancer who toured with her group; ‘The British Blondes’, was one of the first to bring dancing and ‘The Art of Tease’ together and into the spotlight. It was a glamorous and playful kind of entertainment that made the audience furious, while bringing in tickets galore! Lydia went to New York City and caused the same outrage, especially when she showed off her legs by wearing skin-colored stockings!
Paris, on the other hand, was the place where Burlesque really got the chance to flourish. In Paris during the late 1800s you would find a different kind of freedom than anywhere else in the world at that time. While England and America raved about stockings, the era of can-can and the theatres Folies Bergère and Moulin Rouge thrived. This is also the era that inspires Dita von Teese, one of the most famous Burlesque artists alive today.
Burlesque is all about pushing boundaries, questioning the social norms of our society, teasing, surprising and captivating the audience. Today, there are many interpretations and sub-genres. Neo-burlesque is a modern kind of Burlesque that mixes all kinds of genres - only the imagination sets the limits! The most well-known form of neo-burlesque is in the fusion with Striptease. This typically consists of a single performer on stage who entertains, dances and seduces while slowly undressing and ends up in the famous nippel-tassels, glittery lingerie, feathers, lace, etc. This version of neo-burlesque can be seen in many variations and is often what you will experience if you see a Burlesque show in London, Berlin or New York.
As Burlesque is once again growing in popularity, it can be found in almost any kind of fusion and variations. You can find groups like ‘The Lalas’ from L.A, ‘Bombshell Burlesque Academy’ in Australia and ‘The Follie Mixtures’ from England that offers dazzling dance shows filled with feathers, glitter and tease - all the best from the world of Burlesque. We strongly encourage you to explore this amazing universe - and take every opportunity to go and watch a show. You might not find all of it to be your cup of tea, but you will always be entertained and surprised and will leave with a smile on your face. That is, after all, the essence of Burlesque.

We have established Sweet Burlesque as a place where you can express yourself freely through dance, where we encourage building connections, nurturing creativity, and celebrating life. We believe that dance and art can inspire and bring us together as a community.
While we love fun and teasing, Sweet Burlesque reserves the right to ask a student to leave the class (without refund) if their behavior threatens the harmony of the class, lacks respect, exhibits dangerous behavior, or jeopardizes the safety of other students and our instructors. If you ever feel unsure at any point during the class, you are always welcome to reach out to us.
We are committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of our students, and we will do everything reasonably possible to ensure that this is embedded in our training and activities.
